We are researchers at the English Department of the Hong Kong Institute of Education, and are writing a book, 'Hong Kong English Pop', documenting Hong Kong local musicians who sing/write songs in English. This summer we are interviewing singers/songwriters and fans of English pop.
If you are a fan of English pop and want to share your experience, we would to arrange a quick interview with you! If you are singer/song-writer, we would like to arrange a 30-min interview with you, at your convenience. Please help us to perserve the local history on music by agreeing to an interivew. You can contact Alice at 9879 8890 or Debbie at 9436 5899.
Hong Kong English Pop
‘Hong Kong English Pop’ is a project to document the history of Hong Kong popular music, from the 1960s up to the present, with a focus on the experiences and views of local musicians who write, perform or record in English. We are also interested in the contribution of English language pop to multilingualism and multiculturalism in Hong Kong.
The project will lead to a book based on informal interviews with local musicians and their fans. Interviews with musicians will cover (a) how they got involved in the music scene, (b) the kinds of music they enjoy and produce, (c) how and why they write and/or perform English lyrics, and (d) their views on the Hong Kong music scene. Interviews will last about 30 minutes and will be held at a convenient time and place. Although we cannot pay fees, we can buy drinks and snacks!
Interviews with fans will be held before and after gigs and will cover (a) why they have come to the gig, (b) the kinds of music they enjoy, and (c) their views on the music scene. They will usually last less than 5 minutes.
We cannot carry out this project without the help of musicians who have made a contribution to Hong Kong English pop. You can help by agreeing to be interviewed, by helping us to persuade other musicians to be interviewed and by allowing us to interview your fans at gigs. As we plan for the book to include visual material, you can also help by allowing us take photographs or by providing us with some of your publicity materials.
The Hong Kong English Pop project is supported by the Hong Kong Institute of Education and led by Phil Benson (pbenson@ied.edu.hk) and Alice Chik (achik@ied.edu.hk). |
